London Calling For Ropes & Gray

Law firm opens London office, its fourth new branch in the last two years.

Law firm Ropes & Gray has hired attorneys Maurice Allen and Michael Goetz to open a London office in January. The new branch will focus on private equity and debt practices.

Allen and Goetz join Ropes & Gray from White & Case, where they led the London office and served as co-heads of the banking and capital markets practice groups. Under their leadership, White & Case's London office grew from 65 fee earners to 400.

Ropes & Gray's entrance into the U.K. is its fourth geographic expansion in the last two years. During that time period, the firm also opened offices in Chicago, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

David Chapin, a Ropes & Gray private equity and M&A partner, and R. Newcomb Stillwell, the first head of the firm's private equity practice, will assist Allen and Goetz by devoting time to the London office. Chapin, Ropes & Gray's Boston-based strategic development partner, is a member of the firm's policy committee. His clients include Berkshire Partners and Thomas H. Lee Partners. Stillwell also works in Boston and helped establish the firm's private equity practice in the early 1980s.

Goetz represents clients in acquisition finance, leveraged lending, bankruptcy and business reorganization matters. Allen has worked in the London market for 25 years and focuses on cross-border financings and complex transactions.
