CCMP Goes After Consumer, Healthcare Names
Private equity firm hires two executive advisors, including the former chairman and CEO of Triad Hospitals, an acquisition target that got away.
February 11, 2008
New York-based private equity firm CCMP Capital Advisors appointed John Bowlin and James "Denny" Shelton as executive advisors.
Bowlin will focus on investments in the consumer sector, having served in a variety of senior roles at well-known subsidiaries of Philip Morris (now Altria Group).
He was chairman and chief executive of Miller Brewing from 1999 to 2003, and spearheaded its sale to South African Breweries in 2002. Bowlin spent a total of 17 years at Philip Morris, where he was also president of Kraft Foods' international division (1996-1999), president and chief operating officer of Kraft (1994-1996) and president of Oscar Mayer Food (1991-1993). He is currenetly non-executive chairman of Spectrum Brands and Pliant Corp.

Denny Shelton
Shelton, meanwhile, will concentrate on healthcare space investments. Ironically, his résumé includes a stint as chairman and CEO of Triad Hospitals, which CCMP and Goldman Sachs tried unsuccessfully to acquire last year. The offer from CCMP and Goldman's private equity arm, GS Capital Partners, was trumped by Community Health Systems (IDD selected Community Health's acquisition of Triad as the 2007 Healthcare Deal of the Year).
Shelton, currently chairman of Legacy Hospital Partners, led Triad's 1999 spin-off from Columbia/HCA, which he joined as central group president in 1994. He also worked for National Medical Enterprises (now Tenet Healthcare) in executive, senior and regional vice president positions.
"The addition of John Bowlin and Denny Shelton as executive advisors of CCMP is a natural extension of our long and successful history with both executives," said Stephen Murray, CCMP president and CEO, in a statement. "CCMP's operational capabilities will benefit meaningfully from John's considerable consumer goods expertise and Denny's distinguished career in hospital management."
