Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has moved to expand its asset management platform with the hire of veteran investment management executive William Sonneborn.
Formerly president and chief operating officer of Los Angeles investment firm The TCW Group, Sonneborn, 38, will work with KKRs fixed income and capital markets business units, according to KKR co-founders Henry Kravis and George Roberts. Bill Sonneborn will work closely with the credit and capital markets teams to build these and new asset management businesses over time with an eye to the strategies employed by the best large scale asset managers, the pair of co-founders said in a joint statement late Monday.
Sonneborn will be based in San Francisco. He will work with KKR member Scott Nuttall and the pair will coordinate with KKR teams in the US, Europe and Asia. Nuttall and Sonneborn will seek to build out the two business groups as well as recruit additional professionals.
Although he joined TCW in 1998 as a managing director and chief financial officer, Sonneborn became the firms chief operating officer three years later. Then, he was named president in 2005 and, while continuing to oversee the companys operations as COO and president, Sonneborn was named chief executive of The TCW Funds.
In the six years prior to joining TCW, Sonneborn handled marketing as well as corporate finance and M&A assignments involving financial institutions at Goldman Sachs in New York and Hong Kong.
The new KKR executive isnt just involved in the finance business. He sits on the board of the Los Angeles Council of the Boy Scouts of America and serves as a member of its executive committee. The Georgetown University graduate also holds a trustee position at the St. John's Health Center Foundation.
