Alvarez & Marsal hired James Rives and Jeffery Rose as managing directors in its new financial industry advisory services group, which serves distressed financial institutions. Rives is based in Washington, D.C., and was previously an advisor with the International Monetary Fund, where he oversaw financial sector developments for the World Bank, and a managing director at BearingPoint. Rose is based in Houston and was formerly senior vice president and regional manager of Wells Fargo Bank. Rives and Rose were also bank examiners with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the alma mater of their group leader at Alvarez & Marsal, Sam Golden.

Jones Day tapped S. Wade Angus as a partner in its M&A group. Angus focuses on restructuring transactions, in addition to cross-border M&A, private equity and joint ventures. He joins from Weil, Gotshal & Manges, where he was in charge of the firm's practice in Brazil.

Lazard Middle Market brought on Andrew Samett as a managing director. Samett, who joins from Bear Stearns, will become co-head of the firm's distressed advisory and restructuring practice with Andrew Torgove. Samett is based in New York.

The Carlyle Group hired Wachovia veteran James Burr as a managing director in its global financial services group, which aims to recapitalize distressed financial institutions. Burr, who was most recently Wachovia's corporate treasurer, will start on Aug. 1 in Carlyle's New York office.
