Alec Ellison, chairman of Jefferies & Co.'s technology, media and telecommunications sector activities, has been appointed co-head of investment banking at the firm.
Ellison is based in New York and will work closely with the other two co-heads, Chris Kanoff and David Weaver. He and Kanoff will oversee the US investment banking practice, while Weaver will continue to be responsible for European and Asian operations.
"Alec has a tremendous track record of success as an investment banker and as a leader at our firm," said Richard Handler, Jefferies chairman and chief executive. "His experience and perspective will benefit our entire organization as he partners with Chris and David."

Ellison joined Jefferies, which employs 450 investment banking professionals, in 2003 via the firm's acquisition of Broadview International. He started at Broadview, a TMT boutique, in 1988 and became its president in 2001. Ellison began his career in Morgan Stanley's technology group.
"I am excited to partner with Chris and David in driving the continued growth of our investment bank and our firm, and taking on a more active role in the continued development of all of our industry and product verticals," said Ellison.
Earlier this week, Jefferies announced it reshuffled the management of its energy group and hired energy banker Stephen Straty from Bear Stearns.
