When Leonard Green & Partners acquired a minority stake in Whole Foods Market for $425 million, the investment was more than just a big capital infusion for the grocery company. The November purchase, preferred stock that pays an 8% dividend, heralds what some industry participants say could constitute the next major wave of private equity transactions next year.
